Talent and original creativity don't
fade away and disappear amid aggressive campaigns of commercialized and pumped
products, said Maximillien de Lafayette in an article he wrote about Jazz
singers in the New York Monthly Herald, this month. The article came in the
form of a tribute to talented performers who have made their mark on the music
scene. Via a series of interviews with stars such as Carol Sloan, Hilary Kole,
Patti Wicks, Mercedes Hall and Marlene Verplanck, de Lafayette's message came
loud and clear: A great talent is not restrained by an era, defined by market

PH Gallery is showing “84 days
without a fish,” Celeste Fichter’s first solo exhibition with the gallery
featuring a site specific installation loosely inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s
“The Old Man and The Sea.” Using found objects and appropriated imagery,
Fichter’s visual poems explore the struggle for creative survival in a
contrived world. Determined to reorder the ordinary, Fichter layers modes of
representation to infuse meaning and value into the otherwise common and
ubiquitous.

The world-famous Orangerie Museum in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris
reopens on 17 May after eight years of renovation.

Gunmen
have taken advantage of Brazil's carnival commotion to steal paintings by
Picasso, Dali, Matisse and Monet from a Rio de Janeiro museum. The thieves
reportedly brandished a hand grenade to threaten security guards at the
Chacara do Ceu museum. They shut down the security cameras and then slipped
away in a crowd of Samba revellers, said museum officials. Police numbers have
been increased in Rio as the five-day celebration officially got under way.

Rise
of satellite radio
Music legend Bob Dylan's new show on XM Satellite Radio has shown the power and popularity of satellite radio stations in the US. Dylan's show Theme Time Radio Hour sees him play songs connected to a different theme every week - from mothers, the police, whiskey, cars, and - in the first program - the weather. But Dylan is not the only music star broadcasting on satellite radio. Singer and guitarist Tom Petty also has a show, while rapper Eminem hosts his own slot on XM's rival satellite broadcaster Sirius. Read. P. 63

over claims he collided with three parked cars and drove off without

TV dog trainer sued over injury. The host of US TV show The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Millan, is being sued over an allegation that a pet Labrador was injured at his dog training centre. Stones guitarist Keith Richards does not need brain surgery after
suffering a head injury. Some reports speculated that the rock star
would need blood to be drained from his brain after the accident on
holiday in Fiji last month.

The Rolling Stones have played their first concert on mainland
China to a packed audience at Shanghai's Grand Stage venue. The
veteran band began their landmark gig - part of their Bigger Bang world
tour - with classic hit Start Me Up. The 8,000-seat indoor stadium was
filled with an audience made up of mainly non-Chinese fans.

Michael Jackson is demanding an apology from a magazine which spoofed him
in a recent article. A spokesman for Jackson said the star was
"furious" at the GQ article which features a series of photos featuring a
Jackson impersonator.

Singer Annie Lennox is to receive a prestigious US award for her contribution to music. Lennox, 51, will get a Founders Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). It is awarded to songwriters who have made exceptional contributions to music and influenced their peers. Illusionist
David Blaine, who is spending seven-days submerged in a water-filled
sphere, is to receive medical treatment. Blaine's spokesman Pat
Smith said the 33-year-old's peeling skin and overall condition was
worrying doctors. But he added Blaine was "determined" to complete the
"human aquarium" stunt at Lincoln Center in New York.

Rock band The Red Hot Chili Peppers have hit out at a music "pirate" who leaked their new album, Stadium Arcadium, onto the internet. Bass player Michael "Flea" Balzary said the group would be heartbroken if fans downloaded it illegally before its official release. Stadium Arcadium, the band's first studio album in four years, is due to go on sale next week. A spokeswoman for the band said she did not know who leaked the album. A RABBI ELECTED AS MAN OF THE YEAR. London- This year, the Yanks reassessed priorities and searched for quality in choosing their most honored socialites and community leaders. Really! Yep, you bet. The New York Monthly Herald published by WJNA in New York city chose Rabbi Moshe Wiener (left), as Man of the Year. Good for a change. We had enough of Madonna, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Wiener, a humanitarian and published author was written up in a most glowing fashion. The magazine called him a saint, an angel, man for all seasons and all the American nine yards.
